Habitat: Marsh and wet woodlands.

Natural Diet: Omnivorous; eats fruit, greens, insects, worms, and minnows

Size: 3.5 - 4.5 inches, record 5 inches

Lifespan: 20+ years.

Reproduction: Breed March - May, Female lays 3-5 eggs in June. Hatch in the fall or overwinter in the nest.

Conservation: Highly threatened in some areas due to habitat loss and pollution. Hibernates under the mud at the bottom of ponds or in muskrat burrows. Males have brown eyes and a tan chin; females have orange eyes and a yellow chin.
