Range: Most of the eastern United States

Habitat: Slow moving water with muddy or sandy bottoms.

Natural Diet: Fish, worms, insects, tadpoles, frogs

Size: 8 - 15 inches.

Lifespan: 25 + years

Reproduction: Lays eggs on land near water.

Conservation: These turtles and others are being harvested for the Asian food market as well as the pet trade.

Notes: Soft-shells are very bizarre looking turtles. They have a smooth, leathery feeling shell that looks so different from other turtle species. This shell is made of bone like other turtles, but it is covered in thick skin.
