Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches

Range: Madagascar.

Habitat: Tropical rainforest floor. Nocturnal.

Natural Diet:  rotting organic matter

Size: 2-3 inches long

Lifespan: unknown

They produce a hissing noise by pushing air through holes in their abdomen.  There are at least five different hisses used to defend territory, warn of danger, and used in courtship.

Reproduction: Males have 2 large bumps on the tops of their heads.  After mating, females will keep the eggs inside her body until they hatch. Gestation is 60-70 days of about 30 young.

Conservation: Cockroaches are valuable recyclers of organic matter and great source of food for many animals.
